Classes/Tutors

This list contains individual classes that members have used for core or supplemental teaching.  As a hat tip to our Internet age, we also list online classes that members have tried and recommend.

Note: This list does not cover co-ops and communities which offer a variety of classes, those are reviewed on the Co-op page.

 Art

  • Natural Artist Academy (online)

    • Meg is accessible and encouraging through Voxer (live texting and voice app). We recommend her! Bonus is that she's also a believer and Ocean Grove approved.

Dyslexia

Foreign Language

Math

  • Amelia Chan: Math classes, tutoring (various Bay Area locations)

    • We have taken her elementary group classes where she teaches using Beast Academy's Math texts and supplements with her own activities. She is able to explain concepts in different ways so students get it. Friends have also used her individual tutoring service and recommend her.
  •  Jan Cadell: Math tutoring (online)

    • Jen Caddell offers a free trial class and that is how we met her and she became our math teacher.  We are going through Singapore Math books with her once a week and then we help the kids keep up with homework in between sessions.Jen is experienced in teacher math and she is lots of fun so the kids like her.  I also love that Jen is a Christian homeschool mom herself!  She doesn't just teach math but takes any opportunity to help the kids learn if subjects come up.

Music

  •  Jonathan Holowaty: Piano, Guitar (Bay Area)

    • Jonathan has taught several HEART families. He's a skilled musician who has led worship, loves music and truly instills that love into our children. He also has three children of his own and exudes the fruits of peace and patience. I can’t say enough good about him! He will come to your home to teach, you can contact him at his website above or email musicteacherjon AT gmail DOT com.
  • Frank Siegel: Piano (Redwood City)

    • Frank is classically trained and remains active in performing and volunteering. He is patient and teaches to the child's interest, e.g. he transcribed music that my children wanted to play and adapted it to their ability. He teaches from his home in Redwood City and can be contacted at fbs88 AT comcast DOT net.
  • Nellie Wong: Piano (San Bruno)

    • Nellie is a HEART member who has been teaching piano since 2013 from her home in San Bruno. She uses the Piano Adventures books and does a yearly recital in the springtime. All ages and levels welcome, you can contact her at whoanellienellie AT netscape DOT net.

Science

  • College Prep Science (online)

    • Recommended: 6th grade and up
    • Teacher Greg Landry has taught science for many years, first in university, then also online through Landry Academy. He teaches from a Christian, creationist view. What I appreciate is how he uses texts that are standard for high school, even for middle school level, so the material is challenging. He also sets class expectations (e.g. required reading, frequency of homework) similar to college level, so students learn to manage their schedule in addition to learning the material.
  • Excelsior General Science (online)

    • Recommended: 6th or 7th grade
    • Teacher Heather Getson is engaging and responsive to student questions. The course is structured to be done independently, and she gives the students practice in writing nad improving their lab report skills.

Sports

Writing

  • Once Upon A Pen (online and correspondence) Writing and Grammar

    • Recommended: 6th grade and up
    • We have used the Denim-Beret writing program with our teen daughters the past two years and it has been wonderful. It is a mastery approach, correspondence type of program. The teacher/tutor, Cheri Blomquist is awesome.
